Largest-ever Aftermarket Order for Allison's FuelSense® 2.0 MAX

Mitchell Powersystems, the sole UK and Ireland distributor for Allison Transmission, is currently delivering the largest-ever aftermarket order for Allison’s FuelSense® 2.0 MAX software. The upgrade is being rolled out across more than 560 vehicles operated by Biffa Waste Management, a leading UK-based sustainable waste management company.

This major initiative spans locations across the UK and represents a landmark deployment not just for Mitchell Powersystems and Biffa, but for Allison Transmission globally. In fact, this is the largest aftermarket FuelSense® 2.0 MAX order to date across the entire Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region.

The decision follows a six-month trial programme in which Biffa evaluated the performance and efficiency gains of the FuelSense® 2.0 MAX upgrade. The results were significant: fuel savings of up to 9% were recorded across tested vehicles, demonstrating clear potential for both cost savings and environmental impact reduction on a national scale.

“Allison’s FuelSense® 2.0 MAX is expected to reduce carbon emissions from the Biffa fleet by 1.6 million kilograms per year, which is the equivalent of planting over 100,000 trees,” said Steve Lea, Fleet Commercial Manager at Biffa.

“Further, FuelSense 2.0 will cut our diesel bills by over £600,000 annually, which means the cost of the upgrade will be fully recouped in under four months. It’s a win for both the environment and our bottom line.”

FuelSense® 2.0 MAX optimises gear shifting based on vehicle load, road conditions, and driver behaviour, using advanced algorithms to continuously adapt for maximum efficiency. These features make it particularly well-suited to municipal and refuse fleet applications, where start-stop driving patterns are common.

For Mitchell Powersystems, this project underscores its position as a trusted partner in delivering cutting-edge drivetrain solutions across the UK’s commercial and industrial fleet sectors. The company’s technical expertise and long-standing partnership with Allison Transmission continue to support fleet operators in reducing emissions, improving fuel efficiency, and achieving sustainability targets.

This deployment is a strong example of how collaborations between leading technology providers and environmentally conscious operators can deliver real, measurable impact. It also reflects the growing demand for aftermarket solutions that align with decarbonisation goals and operational efficiency in the UK’s waste management industry.
